According to the Constitution (Scheduled Tribes) Order, 1950 (Part V), there are 11 recognized Scheduled Tribes in Himachal Pradesh. These include:
- Gaddi
- Gujjar
- Kinnaura (or Kanaura)
- Lahaula
- Pangwala
- Swangla
- Bodh / Bhot
- Jad, Lamba, and Khampa
- Beta (or Beda)
- Domba, Gara, or Zoba
- Hattee (specifically of the Trans-Giri area of Sirmaur district)
Area vs. Population
The distribution of Scheduled Tribes in Himachal Pradesh presents a significant contrast between geographical spread and demographic density:
- Geographical Area: Tribal areas cover approximately 42.49% (often rounded to 40%) of the state’s total landmass, primarily in the high-altitude districts of Lahaul-Spiti and Kinnaur.
- Population Share: Despite the vast area they occupy, these communities constitute only 5.71% of the state’s total population (per the 2011 Census).
