Lead Bank Responsibility in Himachal Pradesh:

  1. Punjab National Bank (PNB):
    • Oversees six districts:
      • Hamirpur, Kangra, Kinnaur, Kullu, Mandi, and Una.
  2. United Commercial Bank (UCO):
    • Manages four districts:
      • Bilaspur, Shimla, Solan, and Sirmour.
    • Convener bank for the State Level Bankers’ Committee (SLBC).
  3. State Bank of India (SBI):
    • Responsible for two districts:
      • Chamba and Lahaul-Spiti.

Banking Infrastructure in Himachal Pradesh:

  • Over 76% of the State’s network of 2,352 bank branches are situated in rural regions.
  • According to the 2011 census, the State has an average population of 2,919 per bank branch, significantly lower than the national average of 11,000.

District-wise Bank Branch Distribution:

  • Kangra district has the highest number of bank branches: 431.
  • Lahaul-Spiti district has the lowest number of bank branches: 26.

Bank Mitras (Business Correspondent Agents):

  • 11,340 Bank Mitras are deployed across the State to provide basic banking services in villages, especially in areas where physical branches are not financially viable.

Public Sector Banks in Himachal Pradesh:

  • Banks with Regional Offices in the State:
    • PNB, SBI, UCO, Canara Bank, Central Bank of India, Union Bank of India, and Bank of Baroda.
  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has its Regional Office headed by a Regional Director. at shimla
  • NABARD has its Regional Office in Shimla, headed by the Chief General Manager.

Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) in Himachal Pradesh:

  • Total Accounts Under PMJDY (as of September 2024): 18.5 lakh
    • Rural Areas: 16.5 lakh
    • Urban Areas: Approximately 2 lakh
  • Rupee Debit Cards Issued: 12.5 lakh (More than 70% of PMJDY account holders have been provided with these cards).
  • Aadhaar and Mobile Linking:
    • 85% of PMJDY accounts are linked to Aadhaar and mobile numbers as of September 2024.

🧾 Livelihood and Employment Schemes in Himachal Pradesh (2024–25)


🟩 i) National Rural Livelihoods Mission (NRLM)

  • Objective: To reduce poverty by building strong institutions of the poor (especially women) and enabling access to financial and livelihood services.
  • Implementing Agency: HP State Rural Livelihoods Mission (HPSRLM) under the Rural Development Department, Govt. of Himachal Pradesh.
  • Annual Bank Loan Target (FY 2024–25): ₹300.00 crore
  • Targeted Beneficiaries: 24,700 individuals
  • Performance (Till Sept 2024):
    • Sanctioned Cases: 2,647
    • Loan Amount Disbursed: ₹55.81 crore

🟦 ii) National Urban Livelihoods Mission (NULM)

  • Background: Replaces Swarna Jayanti Shahari Rozgar Yojana (SJSRY)
  • Objective: Empower urban poor through Self-Employment Programmes (SEPs)
  • Components: Formation of Individual Enterprises, Group Enterprises, and Self-Help Groups (SHGs)
  • Implementing Agency: Urban Development Department, Himachal Pradesh
  • Performance (Till Sept 2024):
    • Loan Disbursed: ₹4.06 crore under NULM

🟨 iii) Pradhan Mantri Employment Generation Programme (PMEGP)

  • Objective: Promote self-employment through micro-enterprises via credit-linked subsidy
  • Nodal Agency: Ministry of MSME, implemented through:
    • Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC)
    • Khadi and Village Industries Board (KVIB)
    • District Industries Centres (DICs)
  • Target (FY 2024–25):
    • Units: 1,174
    • Margin Money Target: ₹32.16 crore
  • Performance (Till Sept 2024):
    • Units Approved: 495
    • Margin Money Disbursed: ₹18.71 crore
