Newton-Raphson Method: Interactive Guide

Newton-Raphson

Step 1 The Formula

The Newton-Raphson method uses the derivative to find the root of a differentiable function \( f(x) \).

Iterative Formula

$$x_{n+1} = x_n – \frac{f(x_n)}{f'(x_n)}$$

Key Idea: We follow the tangent line at \( x_n \) to where it intersects the x-axis.

Geometric Interpretation

Unlike Bisection (which chops intervals) or Secant (which cuts through two points), Newton’s method uses the slope (tangent) at a single point to “slide” down to the root.
